Militant attack kills district chief in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL: Militants killed a local government official in eastern Afghanistan and detonated a bomb in front of a police station in the northwest, wounding nine civilians.

Rohullah Samon, a spokesman for Paktia province, said Tuesday that the chief of Shewak district died after his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.

In Badghis province in the northwest, provincial health director Dr Abdul Aziz Tariq said the bomb planted outside police headquarters in Qalay-i-Naw wounded nine, including one child and a woman.

In other violence, Nato reported the deaths of two service members. One died Monday following an insurgent attack in the east. The second was killed in a bomb attack Tuesday in the south.

Nineteen coalition service members have died so far this month in Afghanistan.
